When pine trees die naturally, they concentrate resins in the heart of the tree to create tjärved, also called "fat wood" or "heart of pine". The burning of these resins has been used in the Nordic folk magic tradition as a energetic smoke cleansing material. Similarly used as palo santo, Tjärved is sustainable and not a culturally appropriated magical tool.
